Holistic Health: The Importance of Fresh Air, Sunshine, and How to Manage Seasonal Allergies

Monthly Edition: JUNE 2025

Dear Aabcor, Inc. Community,

As we embrace the warmer weather, it’s important to take advantage of nature’s gifts!  Vitamin D levels, exposure to fresh air and sunshine, and managing seasonal allergies can significantly impact our well-being. Below, we explore how these elements contribute to improved health and provide guidance on managing symptoms during allergy season.

The Power of Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin

Vitamin D is crucial for maintaining strong bones and a healthy immune system. Our bodies can produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, but as we age - our ability to synthesize vitamin D diminishes. This can lead to falls, fractures, and weakened immune systems in elderly individuals. For individuals with brain injuries, maintaining healthy vitamin D levels is especially important as it plays a role in brain health and cognitive function (Bertone-Johnson, 2009).

Sunshine does more than just provide vitamin D - it’s also vital for mental health! Exposure to natural light helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, improving sleep quality and mood. For elderly individuals, adequate sleep is crucial for memory retention, cognitive function, and overall vitality. Research has shown that individuals with brain injuries can experience disrupted circadian rhythms, and exposure to sunlight can help improve those patterns (Pritchard et al., 2018).

A Breathe of Fresh Air: Breathe In, Breathe Out

Taking short walks or sitting outdoors in the fresh air can help increase oxygen levels, promote circulation, and reduce stress.  Here are some tips for safe outdoor exposure!

  • Start with short periods of exposure and gradually increase your time outdoors as tolerated.

  • Wear protective clothing and don’t forget to use sunscreen!

  • Move to a shaded area during warmer temperatures.

Managing Seasonal Allergies: Comfort During Allergy Season

As summer approaches, seasonal allergies become more elevated due to the increase in pollen. For individuals with brain injuries, managing these allergies is crucial to avoid exacerbating existing health conditions. Seasonal allergies can trigger inflammation and discomfort - leading to breathing difficulties, disrupted sleep, and decreased energy.

Ways to Manage Allergies Effectively!

  • Stay Informed: Monitor local pollen counts and stay indoors during high pollen times (typically early morning and evening).

  • Use Air Purifiers: Air purifiers can help reduce pollen and other allergens.

  • Medications: Over the counter antihistamines and nasal sprays can help reduce symptoms, but ALWAYS check with a healthcare provider first!

  • Nasal Irrigation: Rinsing the nasal passages with saline can help clear allergens from the nose and improve breathing.

  • Create Allergen-Free Zones: Designate areas in the home, such as bedrooms, where windows can remain closed and allergens are minimized.

Conclusion: A Holistic Approach to Well-Being

For individuals with brain injuries, maintaining health during the changing seasons requires attention to several key factors: adequate vitamin D, sunshine and fresh air, and managing seasonal allergies. By incorporating these elements into daily life - we can improve our physical, mental, and emotional health.

Stay safe, healthy, and energized as you embrace the wonders of the season!
